The opportunities that we have had are as follows: A European Tour to Poland, two square-dance cruises (Mexican Rivera and Caribbean), State Fairs, an H.B.O. Movie special called Barbarians at the gate (starring James Garner), live recorded square-dance CDs with Deborah Carroll-Jones and Dan Nordbye, ten Nationals Conventions and right now we are talking to the future National Chairpersons for the upcoming National Conventions.

Bear Miller

Bear and his wife Sandy (also know as Bear Control) are natives of Denver Colorado. He is the club caller for four clubs. Joined CALLERLAB in 1991. Has conducted over 95 Mainstream classes, 45+ Plus classes and a few Advanced. He is an Accredited Caller Coach and member of the Board of Governor's. The dancers enjoyment and success is always what's most important to him.

Mike Hogan

Mike Hogan became involved in square dancing for a different reason than most people. His reason was that he wanted to date Denise. Her parents were square dancers and cuers in Omaha. Denise was a square dancer and he believed, rightly so, that learning to dance would give him a leg up on the competition. What he discovered was number one, that he could date Denise, and number two, that he loved the activity as well!!! Mike started calling square dances in 1976. Like every other caller, he started by calling for local clubs in the Omaha area. Mike has been a leader in the square dance activity, both locally and nationally. Locally, he has been the President of the Omaha Callers and Cuers Association and President of the Nebraska Callers and Cuers Association. He continues in the position to this day. After learning about multi-cycle square dance lessons at a CALLERLAB convention, Mike and Lanny Weaklend started the program in Omaha in 1998. New classes started four times a year instead of just in September. Mike co-taught this program for 20 years. Nationally, Mike joined CALLERLAB in 1986. He has attended 20 CALLERLAB conventions and received the Quarter Century Certificate (25 years of calling) in 2001. He has held numerous positions on various committees within the organization. He is a member of the following Committees: Basic/Mainstream, Plus, SSD, Public Relations, Social Connections, Ways and Means, and Marketing. Mike is a recording artist for Blue Star Records and has a number of popular singing calls to his credit. He also is a contributor to “ASD – Square Dance Magazine,” our national square dance publication. He is currently contributing a monthly article on marketing square dancing to the public. Mike’s passion is marketing square dancing. He has done numerous presentations on the topic around the country, and at National Square Dance Conventions. He has written a marketing manual that can be used by callers and dancers to promote the activity. Throughout the years, Denise has supported Mike in his passion, and has been there for him as he tackles new projects. Together they make a strong team of square dance advocates.

Mike Seastrom

Mike Seastrom has been dancing since 1960, and calling since 1963. He started dancing after losing a bet to his mother and calling when he tried to show his 6th grade teacher what “square dancing was really like”. He taught his first class in 1963 after borrowing money from his folks to buy a small sound system and was able to pay them back before the class was over. After receiving his doctorate in 1976, Mike joined CALLERLAB in 1977, and has been Chairman of several committees, as well as an annual presenter for interest sessions and seminars at CALLERLAB conventions. Mike served on the Board of Governors from 1984 to 2003 and completed a two-year term as the CALLERLAB Chairman of the Board in 1994. He was also awarded the Milestone Award in 2001 by two of his mentors, Bob Van Antwerp and Bob Osgood. He submits the monthly CALLERLAB Viewpoint articles to “American Square Dance” magazine and his articles have appeared in various publications around the world. Mike teaches, calls Basic through C-1, prompts contras, and also enjoys doing dance party events when his schedule allows. He is a strong advocate for the Multi-Cycle Method of teaching new dancers and enjoyed a very successful program with the Valley Trailers Square Dance club in California. Mike currently teaches for the Buckles & Bows. Mike records for Rhythm Records, regularly does Caller Clinics, and helped produce an Introduction to Contra Dancing package for R & R Video, with the California Contra Callers Association. Calling has given Mike the opportunity to travel extensively in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. Mike enjoys dancing as well as calling and still feels that “dancing as a team of eight” is the best recreation in the world. A recently retired dentist, calling is an avocation for “Dr. Mike.” His wonderful wife Lisa, his family, and staff have been a tremendous support.

Mitchell & Chelsea Thompson

Mitchell Thompson comes from a family with an extensive background in square dancing, so it was only natural for him to get involved. He did so by learning to square dance and joining the Rocky Mountain Dancers performance group at the young age of 13. He enjoyed squares, but it wasn’t long before he discovered that his real passion was for rounds. Under the tutelage of John Herr, he learned to cue. Two short years later, in 2005, he became a member of Roundalab and started both cueing dances and teaching round dance classes. He loved it and has been doing it ever since. In a short time he became one of the prominent cuers in the Denver area. He now cues for over 10 clubs across Colorado and teaches both group and private lessons on a regular basis. He teaches all levels of round dance, but particularly enjoys teaching beginning rounds because he loves being able to bring new people into such a great activity. He has also choreographed several dances and taught his own choreography at both state and national conventions. He met his dance partner, Chelsea, at his first national convention: Denver, CO 2004. In 2013, they started teaching together and really bonded over their passion for dance. They were married in November of 2017. They dance phase II-VI and have recently gotten involved in social ballroom dancing. They look forward to seeing you on the dance floor!

Location

The Avalon Ballroom

Dance Floor

Dancers covet cushioned floors because multi-layered wood provides a cushioned surface, much easier on knee and ankle joints than other surfaces.

Since 1995, volunteers from the Boulder dance community have poured hundreds of hours into laying the wood floors in the Ballroom, Sodal Hall, the Tango Studio and, most recently, the Ballroom stage.
